Under Paris 2: Sharks Return to a Flooded Seine

The sharks are returning to Paris, and this time, Paris is facing a disaster on an even grander scale. In Under Paris 2, the upcoming Netflix sequel to the internationally successful 2024, the city is once again transformed by the catastrophic events of the first movie.

Bejo and Lyes reprise their respective roles and in the new director's seat, and an ever-changing threat of the sharks down below, the story is primed to continue the first movie's success.

For viewers researching the film online, searches such as movie box on play store may appear alongside questions about streaming availability. However, the confirmed distribution home for the sequel is Netflix.

A New Chapter in a Submerged Paris

Three years have passed since the events of the first movie.

Central Paris is still partially submerged, and the once mighty river Seine has become even more threatening.

Sophia and Adil are called upon to reunite and team up once more against Lilith, who is still at large. The duo is forced to go into threatening waters to uncover the secrets of Lilith.

However, the directors have also claimed that the various species of marine life hide even more surprising secrets.

What that is, is still unknown.

Because of all of this, the directors of Under Paris 2 are free to explore the effects of an environmental disaster on an urban area and its effects on the people of that area.

One of the biggest confirmed developments is the return of the two principal performers from the original movie.

Bérénice Bejo reprises her role of Sophia, a marine scientist, and her knowledge of shark behaviors become critical when the sharks make their way to Paris.

Nassim Lyes reprises his role as Adil, the police commander from the first film, who also happened to survive the traumatic events of the first film.

The reuniting of the characters is also important as they both witnessed the destruction caused by Lilith and her kind.

The follow up also features Guillaume Gouix, Philippe Bas, Manon Bresch, and Anne Marivin.

Even though the other cast members have been confirmed, descriptions of their characters and where their stories lead have not been disclosed.

It's the same for newcomers as well. Fans of the series will have to wait for the promotional season to uncover more about the series.

Now, as a new film director, Alexandre Aja has also joined the follow-up film project.

As an experienced director who likes to combine creatures of the horror genre with films that focus on survival, Aja could very well direct the sequences of the sharks attacking with the same flair and style that he is known for.

Of course, those differences would still remain expectations and theories based on his previous films.

One of his previous collaborators, Frédéric Garcia is also listed as a writer for the film along with Aja, Grégory Levasseur, William Laboury and Xavier Gens.

As previously mentioned, Gens also directed the first installment of the film that premiered on Netflix in 2024.

Having a number of the original film's creatives as well as a new film director gives the follow-up film potential for a new cinematic direction.

Why the First Under Paris Became Popular

The original movie gained international attention with its unique creature-feature-meets-European concept.

The film's authors positioned their shark attacks in Paris, as opposed to a coastal or oceanic resort, and brought the attacks into the Seine River, placing them in full view of Paris's landmarks.

The original movie's environmental theme was not the focus of other traditional shark thrillers.

The first movie gained international attention and demonstrated the interest global audiences have in French-language genre productions.

Its dramatic finale also left many questions unanswered, including what happens to the surviving characters, making it ripe for a sequel.

What Makes the Sequel Different?

Unlike the first movie which revolves around attacks taking place in the Seine, the second movie takes place in a Paris that is partly submerged.

As such, other areas that were previously part of urban, ordinary life, may now become part of an unpredictable watery landscape.

Also, where the first movie had a single shark, the second has a school of sharks.

So while the second movie has some differences, it's yet to be confirmed whether other mutations and/or changes may also be included.

Search phrases, such as movie box update version, may be found when users search for the latest information about movies on various entertainment forums. However, these discussion do not contain verified information about the movie, its sequel, production, or release.

For the most detailed information, wait for Netflix to release official information, or for major/reputable publications to cover the information.

When Will Under Paris 2 Be Released?

Under Paris 2 will be released on Netflix in 2027.

No specific date has been released, nor has Netflix fully detailed their release schedule.

As with the first film, distribution will also be by Netflix.

More information and marketing materials will likely show us where Alexandre Aja will take us creatively with this film and introduce us to the new characters.

For now, the confirmed return of Sophia and Adil, the search for Lilith, and the haunting image of flooded Paris give us where to begin with this next chapter.

The first film focused more on environmental horror, but with the larger scope of a survival thriller, where this chapter of the series will go is fully dependent on Netflix's next release.
