Queen at Sea: Juliette Binoche's Family Dilemma

Queen at Sea (2026) is a family drama about the moral dilemmas that illness presents when a person is no longer able to express what they want and make decisions for themselves.

Juliette Binoche plays Amanda, who has returned to London to help her mom Leslie who is suffering from a more severe stage of Dementia. Leslie's husband Martin (Tom Courtenay) believes he knows what his wife wants.

It doesn't take long before Martin and Amanda become divided over Leslie's best interest.

Lance Hammer's directorial debut has a limited theatrical release in the US on October 30, 2026, with Greenwich Entertainment.

Amanda's Return

Because of the more advanced stage of Leslie's dementia, Amanda returns to London to find ordinary communication and decision-making has become more complicated.

Amanda has to rely on Martin to interpret Leslie's wishes.

But according to the official synopsis, Martin takes "care" to a different level than what is appropriate.

There is a division between what is best for Leslie.

Both Martin and Amanda love Leslie and want what is best for her, but they have conflicting ideas of what this is.

For those finding the title through unrelated entertainment searches like "kannada movierulz," the confirmed U.S. release is a theatrical one through Greenwich Entertainment.

Tom Courtenay Plays Martin

Tom Courtenay plays Martin, Leslie's husband and Amanda's stepfather.

Martin has a long history with Leslie, and believes that their history together enables him to understand Leslie best.

Amanda takes a different position.

She fears that familiarity and love may not be sufficient when someone has lost a significant part of their cognitive abilities.

That creates disagreement and makes Martin more layered than an antagonist.

The focus of the movie is on the caring intention of several people including Martin, who though reach different, sometimes irreconcilable, conclusions about Leslie.

Courtenay's performance was recognized at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival where he was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance, shared with Anna Calder-Marshall.

Anna Calder-Marshall Plays Leslie

Anna Calder-Marshall plays Leslie who is at the heart of most challenging situations in the film.

The central challenge in the film is that, Leslie is often unable to express her wishes clearly. This is painful for everybody.

Amanda is determined to shield Leslie from further pain. Martin is determined to maintain the relationship they shared before the illness. The medical professionals and the institutions have different responsibilities still.

Rather than providing an answer to the central challenge, Queen at Sea focuses on how much authority relatives should have when a person is unable to consistently express what they want.

The Vancouver International Film Festival says the movie examines dementia, consent, care and autonomy.

These themes make the movie less about finding an answer and more about addressing why the question is so difficult.

Binoche stars in family drama

Juliette Binoche's character Amanda is pulled in many different directions.

She is a daughter defending her mother, a stepdaughter going against Martin and a mother with her own life and relationships outside this situation.

Florence Hunt, Steven Cree and Cody Molko are a part of the supporting cast.

Binoche's performance keeps the movie focused on the reality of being a caregiver and the emotional burden of not being able to solve everything.

Amanda can not fix her mother's dementia.

There are changing conditions, contradicting opinions and the process of dealing with the fact that the choices she makes are emotionally draining and may not be the best decisions.

For the audience that discovers the movie through 'telugu movierulz' search terms, its release is separated from those terms. Greenwich Entertainment has the U.S. distribution rights.

Lance Hammer returns after Ballast

Lance Hammer does the same things for this movie as he did for Ballast, which was released in 2008.

There are about 18 years between his first and second feature films.

Adolpho Veloso is the DP, and Tristan Goligher and Hammer are the producers.

The movie was filmed in the U.K. and U.S. and is in English and French.

Hammer's way of film making is not very melodramatic.

The movie focuses on intimate settings and conversations to show how the different family members deal with the conflict in their own ways.

The focus is on the family unit as a whole and the largest problems the family faces.

Queen at Sea opens October 30

Queen at Sea opens limited U.S. theaters on October 30, 2026 through Greenwich Entertainment and is 131 minutes long.

Before its U.S. theatrical release, the film competed at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall tied for Best Supporting Performance.

These awards showed the films focus on performances rather than conventions of plot.

The movie's focus is on a family whose problem can't be easily solved.

Martin wants to keep Leslie safe, but in order to do that, he needs to let her go. Leslie can no longer easily express her wants, and so Martin has to make the difficult decisions for her and do what is best for her.

Because of this, Queen at Sea poses the very difficult question of how much do you protect and take away from someone you love who can no longer depend on themselves?
